Dentures have been used for generations to treat tooth loss. Advancements in dentistry allow them to look and feel more natural than ever. Although they are durable and will fit your mouth like a glove, you won’t be able to savor a juicy steak right away. It can take a few days to get used to eating with your new set of teeth. Here are 8 tips to make the transition period easier.
1. Start with Soft Foods
A well-fitting denture shouldn’t cause any discomfort; however, your gums and jaw may be a little sore as they get used to your new teeth. Eat soft foods for a few days and introduce your regular diet gradually.
2. Check the Temperature of Foods and Drinks
Dentures create a barrier between your gums and the roof of your mouth, which can lead to accidental burns if you aren’t careful. It’s best to check the temperature of your foods and drinks to prevent burning your soft tissues.
3. Avoid Holding Hot Liquids in Your Mouth
Your dentist likely explained the risks of exposing your dentures to hot water when cleaning them. However, holding hot liquids in your mouth can also warp your dentures. Use caution when eating hot soups or drinking coffee to avoid damaging your dentures.
4. Cut Your Food into Small Pieces
You don’t want to bite off more than you can chew. Cut your food into small pieces to make them easier to break down. It will also put less wear and tear on your new teeth to prolong the lifespan of your denture.
5. Chew Slowly and Carefully
Nothing is worse than biting your tongue or cheek. Slow down when eating and chew your food carefully to prevent harming your soft tissues.
6. Skip Sticky or Chewy Foods
Chewy and sticky foods can dislodge your dentures. They can also cause added pressure, which can lead to gum or jaw pain. Your dentures can also be vulnerable to damage. It’s better to limit how often you have foods that require a lot of chewing or cling to your teeth.
7. Chew On Both Sides of Your Mouth
Get in the habit of chewing on both sides of your mouth. Uneven pressure distribution can weaken your denture over time. It can also cause jaw pain and gum inflammation. Make a conscious effort to chew evenly.
8. Skip Hard Foods
Your dentures are durable, but they aren’t any match for nuts, seeds, and other hard foods. It’s best to skip them altogether to safeguard your investment.
In no time at all, you may soon forget your dentures aren’t part of your natural smile. You’ll be able to enjoy all your favorite foods to keep your body nourished.
